I mean there were already touch screen phones when the iPhone came out. We used to call them PDA phones.
And they've improved vastly since then.

There is a book called The Origin of Brands from 2004 which made some very unfortunate predictions like this. The book discusses in detail why smartphones would never ever be successful. It was pretty facepalmy for the entire read.
