Here's a good example. 28 year old Jonathan Simmons paid $150 a few years ago to go to an open try-out for the San Antonio Spurs (NBA).
He was picked up, played for very little money and proved himself in his first season, so much so, that he now has a 3-year, $20 million contract elsewhere.
If he had quit playing semi-pro at 24, when players are already not considered young prospects anymore, he would've been a loser.
