RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) - As Toys "R" Us stores across the country prepare to close for good Friday night, an employee at the Raleigh location said the store would not be open on the final day of business.

The staff member said that’s because an anonymous person purchased $1 million worth of the remaining toys at the Triangle Town Center location to donate to local children.

The staff will spend the last day boxing up the few toys left to put on a truck.

Today marks the end of an era as Toys "R" Us, one of the largest toy retailers in the country, closes its doors for the final time.

The retailer is going out of business across the nation. All 700 stores will shut down.

The stores started liquidation back in March with 30 percent off sales. Many stores are now offering 80 percent off or more on the last day of business.

The 70-year-old company filed for bankruptcy back in late 2017 and since then the company hasn't been able to turn itself around financially.

Thousands of workers across the United States will be out of a job after the stores close today.

I had a lot of memories of Toys 'R' Us growing up. I grew up in the hood and we couldn't afford game systems. At 10 years old, I would spend my summers riding my bike with my friend to visit the store at the other side of town. It took us about two hours but it was a blessing to escape all the negativity in the hood. We spent hours playing Golden Eye and the employees knew us very well. They would give us water and snacks. The only thing that drove us nuts was the 30 minute reset on the demo game console.

Thank you for the memories and RIP overpriced toys.
