So, if someone cut off the skin covering their eyeballs would it help them see or hinder their ability to swim through sand?

If the eye is freed on infancy, is there a possibility for the mole to acquire reasonable vision? I know it would probably make it harder for them to survive on a sand setting, but what if they were raised by actual moles?
