A strip mall near me has a little independent dollar store. I'm honestly amazed that they're still afloat; there's an actual Dollar Tree about half a mile down the road. About a month ago, the sign outside changed from
"All items are $1!"
to
(handwritten) "Almost" "All items are $1!"
I'm not sure if they expanded their selection (they did have a costume jewelry display visible from the door) or if they realized that there were things that didn't work at that price point.

Many dollar stores in NYC say “99¢, more or less” which is even more asshole design.
