This reminds me of when NBA player Chris Paul's grandfather was murdered back when he was in high school. His grandfather was very supportive of his burgeoning basketball career, and to commemorate him Chris Paul set out to score one point for every year his grandfather lived (61) in his next game.
Chris Paul gets his 61st point on a lay-up where he gets fouled, but when he goes to the free throw line he purposefully chucks an airball. He walked off the court and to the bench where he went to cry as his family and teammates hugged him and supported him during this emotional time.
