Tbf I've met plenty of vets that did feel disrespected for one reason or another. The biggest issue I've found with this whole ordeal is some people seek to view veterans as some monolithic entity instead of a massive group made up of people from every background imagineable. We should stop putting them on a pedestal too but that won't happen anytime soon in America.
I think the fact that people only associate the flag with veterans is a complete issue in itself. The flag represents us all - veterans, professionals, Walmart workers, athletes, truck drivers...
