What is the difference between "wins popular vote overall" and "wins popular vote on election night" here?

At the risk of stating the obvious here, if you remove just the 5 NYC counties and also LA county, that's ~8% of the total US population.
Or another way, if just those 6 counties combined to form their own state, it would instantly be the most populous state in the Union.
So yea, small # of counties, but you're talking about removing 1 out of every 13 12-ish people in the country.

I find it hilarious that in this thread people who are both extremely pro and anti the Electoral College are using this as a bullproof reasoning for why they are right.
