I found this in a recent /tg/ thread on "tricking" groups into doing dumb things, and I thought it belonged here.

In Curse of Strahd, there's an unguarded caravan right beside an abandoned wizards tower. One of my players IMMEDIATELY tried to break in through the front door and proceeded to blow up the caravan (front door is trapped with like 120 alchemists fire bottles, bottom trap door is completely unlocked but also hidden), and cause about a dozen werewolves to come after them.

I've made bad choices when not metagaming. I think it's more fun.

Once I played a Lawful Evil Assassin that thought very highly of himself due to a narcissistic streak. On one occasion he was tasked with sneaking into an estate by means of a ladder-door on the roof that lead into the attic.

While checking the door for traps I rolled a 1. From a meta-standpoint I suspected there was a trap, but because I had rolled a 1 thought that my assassin had done such a bad job of it that he actually thought he did a great job, because he thinks so highly of himself.

So he opened the door, it was trapped with an explosive. He was instantly knocked down to < 0 HP and flung out into the courtyard, it ruined the plan to sneak in obviously.

One person was mad at me because it was "obviously" trapped, but the rest of the table thought it was hilarious.
