I'm adding this side note, even though it doesn't contradict the arguments made at all, because I've noticed a lot of people forget this when bringing up the "what about the small animals and insects displaced or killed for farming" argument: livestock need to eat too. So when you are eating meat, the impact also encompasses the impact of farming vegetation, plus the impact of raising and butchering the livestock.

I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but a lot of people seem to forget that when arguing with vegans and vegetarians so I thought I'd put it out there. Veganism and vegetarianism still significantly reduce environmental impact and animal cruelty. I would argue very significantly reduce, even, but I can't back that up so I won't. I did read once that if everyone in the US were to reduce our meat intake by just 10% it would have a massive positive impact on the environment, but that was years ago so I don't have a source.
