Further explanation to what the USGS is saying: Krakatoa is a stratovolcano, which are the type that errupt violently with a lot of ash, rock, and fumes (tephra). These are the Hollywood volcanoes. Hawaii is made of shield volcanoes, which may produce a lot of lava, but generally don't produce the same amount of tephra.
I live on the big island. I’ve heard of many tourists cancelling their flights because of the recent volcano activity, when in reality it’s only a very small portion of the island that’s truly in any danger. You can still come here and explore every other part of the island and be fine.
