I had a 2pm class where the prof straight up told us that if we had an absence due to a death, we had to provide a death certificate to not be docked attendance points. Some profs are just obsessed with making kids show up/really have their feelings hurt when people miss classes.
The only classes I ever have with mandatory attendance are GE classes. With engineering classes, cutting class just means you're more and more likely to fail.

It's nice to have optional lecture attendance, I watch all mine online the evening after.
