I grew up in Boston, MA and had never really been outside New England until I moved to Colorado at the age of 28. That drive across the country was incredibly eye-opening, and completely changed my perspective of the world. I simply had no idea how vast and empty the Midwest could be.
Edit: I didn't mean to imply that driving through endless cornfields provided me with worldly knowledge, quite the opposite. It made me realize that I was seriously ignorant about my own country, never mind the rest of the world.

Crazy that the top two examples put Chicago, DFW, and Houston in the red sections too. The #3, #4, and #5 MSAs by population.
Edit: DFW is Dallas-Fort Worth. Sorry for the confusion.
