“Troopers found an individual standing in the middle of the roadway with a large white dog,” Trooper Mark Cepiel told local news outlets.

Police found him standing ‘heroically’ with the dog in his arms when they arrived at the scene, WNYT News Channel 13 reports. They say he admitted to mixing LSD with cough medicine.

“He believed that the residence was on fire and he was rescuing the dog,” Trooper Mark Cepiel told WNYT.

Trooper Cepiel added that the suspect was “not a cat burglar” and peacefully handed over the dog to officers.

Orchard, who police say had banged on the door of other neighbours yelling about a fire, was charged with second degree burglary and third degree criminal mischief. He will not face any drugs charges.

“He drove over yards and through the fence. At no point was he on the roadway and no illegal substances were found in his possession,” Trooper Cepiel added.

Orchard was held on $15,000 bail and taken into custody at Saratoga County Jail. He is set to appear in court on October 28.

I found the photo caption very funny: “Michael Orchard and a file photo of a dog that was not involved in the incident“
