My dad was similar. When I left for college he yelled “take your damn cat with you!” .
First time home to visit and he’s petting Abner and saying “he’s my buddy!” And loved him for the remaining 13 more years of of that cat’s life.

I convinced my dad to keep a stray despite his objection that 50-year old single men don't have cats. That cat now has more toys then I did growing up.
