Technically, the raspy 1983 Wild Heart dance track "Stand Back," was written by Nicks herself – but Nicks has said it "belongs" to Prince. She likes to tell its origin story: It was the day of her wedding, she and her new husband Kim Anderson were driving North to Santa Barbara for their honeymoon when she heard "Little Red Corvette" for the first time. She wrote "Stand Back" start to finish that day, humming along to the Prince single. When she later went to record the song, she called to tell him the story. Twenty minutes later the Purple One showed up at her studio. He "walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about 25 minutes and then left," she later told Timothy White. "He spoiled me for every band I've ever had because nobody can exactly recreate – not even with two piano players – what Prince did all by his little self."

I saw Stevie live on her latest tour, and it wasn’t too long after prince had died (I think it was almost exactly a year). She talked about him a lot, told lots of stories about working with him and how much she liked him. She mentioned something about how he pulled up to the studio in some ridiculous looking car and parked like directly outside the door where it wasn’t even a space or something, and how funny it was. Anyways, when she performed Stand Back the background visuals were just video clips and images of Prince.

She really clearly thought a lot of him as an artist, and I’m sure as someone who had struggled with some pretty heavy drug addiction issues and come out of it ok, knowing he went the way he did, struggling with opioids and pain issues, that must have made her think.

He also offered her Purple Rain

the unlikely duo got its start during the sessions for Nicks' solo smash 'Stand Back,' which features uncredited synth work by Prince, which was inspired by his hit 'Little Red Corvette.' Understandably enthused by the results, Nicks suggested they work together again, but when Prince responded by sending her a demo for what would ultimately become 'Purple Rain,' she froze.

"It was so overwhelming," she later explained. "I listened to it and I just got scared. I called him back and said, ‘I can’t do it. I wish I could. It’s too much for me.’ I’m so glad that I didn’t, because he wrote it, and it became ‘Purple Rain.’"

Two INCREDIBLE artists working together. I love stories of when people collaborate and support each other instead of building up competition.
