I asked my bar guest what she was writing. Turns out she has 3 daughters and she writes 5 lines a day to each of them. These will be gifts when they get married one day. Mom of the year.

My dad wrote me a long, hand written letter while he was on an airplane overseas when I was just born. He gave it to me in my mid/late 20s. When he gave it to me, I was only a little younger than he was when he wrote the letter. I was an absolute wreck when I read it. I still am just thinking of it.

Instead of the friendly but rather stoic dad I had grown to know and love, my dad sounded just like me. Full of fears and hopes–wildly sincere and a touch overly optimistic. It’s easily the most vulnerable conversation I’ve ever had with my Dad, and he reached out to me spanning a good 27 years to say his part. I routinely throw away or give away most of my possessions. I could pack up my life into a couple of bags no problem. But that letter is one of my most treasured possessions and I will always have it with me.

I cannot possibly understate what this will mean to your kids. Do it. It doesn’t matter what you write or if you feel silly doing it. It will mean so much to them.

So let's hope none of them are on Reddit, otherwise surprise ruined...

My mom did this and it ended up as a series of digs at my various girlfriends and questioning my life choices. And calling my father an alcoholic. Then she gave it to me when I graduated from college. We don't talk much.
