My grandmother was in a home for dementia and alzheimers. She had a much older roommate who was still all together so she watched out for her.

My grandfather would visit my grandma every day (they were married 61 years), to the point where the nurses brought him food, too, and was there for her last breath. He still goes and visits the women who watched out for her... Even sneaks in some booze for them on the holidays

That's a special person, right there

My dads in one of those homes. Hes 70 but he looks damn near 40. Hes been active all his life. A gymnastic champion software architect with a BA in computer science. Had one really bad heart attack on a 6 mile run and got vascular dementia. Was never the same man again. Seeing him in that home all alone among frail old people waiting to die..its so heart breaking. Those places are meant to be good, surely, but its really depressing..i miss my dad.

My grandma got some pretty strong dementia near the end of her life and it got to the point where we couldn't properly take care of her anymore. As we were touring the living room area of the dementia/alzheimers unit my grandma walked over to a group of ladies sitting around a table and said, "Playing a game of cards?" There were no cards anywhere. I thought for sure they were going to think she was crazy. But the one lady responded with "I don't have a grandson." That's when I realized she'd get along just fine there.
