My grandfather was an artillery commander and I remember from him that soldiers of the time expected to die anyday. Part of the horror of war is having your perspective of safety and risk completely shattered. The whole world is do dangerous that the idea of accidents like the tank falling over or things like the risks of smoking become things you just stop worrying about.
