I was lucky enough to have a family of burrowing owls live in an empty lot across the street from my house. They would hang out in my yard and eat all the bugs and were cool as hell to have around. The next best part was the city maintained the lot and nobody was allowed to build a house there because they are threatened in Florida. Owls rock!

Edit: For those asking, yes this was in SWFL the Cape Coral area which is know for its owl population and hosts The Burrowing Owl Festival every year.

They are also protected in the State of Florida because population but not globally.

They may swoop at a small dog or cat doubt it would be much more. They used to sit on my mail box and let me walk almost to them before flying away.
