When Aegon forged the Iron Throne, he did not do it because it was his birthright. He conquered all the other kingdoms, and he ensured none can dispute his claim. The Targeryens kept the throne through power. When Robert claimed the throne, he did it with power, through war. All Stannis did was bitch about his birthright to everyone, and expect them to respect him for it. He lacked diplomacy, he lacked understanding of the game, and most importantly, he lacked power.
