Hopefully the rental car company feels the same way.

Something similar happened to me a few months ago.

I was making a late night run to Wal-Mart and backed into someone's front bumper. Punched a hole through the thing with my tow hitch.

I didn't have a pen and paper. So I just waited until they showed up. It was a lady in her mid thirties and said that it was her father's car. We exchanged info and she said they would be in touch.

The guy called me back two days later and told me he got an esitmate for 500 bucks. So we agree to meet up.

I hand him the 500 and apologize again for the damage.

He says thank you for being honest and hands me 240 of it back.

I was a little dumbstruck and asked what he was doing.

"You saved me money because you were honest. I'd like to return the favor."

In his eyes if I had just driven off, which I could have, he would have had to foot the entire repair bill. So he decided to split it with me.

I insisted he take the whole 500 but he refused.

Honesty pays.

The receptionist at my job hit my car as it was parked. She called me and told me, and kept calling me once a week asking if I had had taken it to the mechanic yet(she wanted to pay me back the cost). The mechanic is an hours drive away and I dont care about a little dent, so I'd say "yeah, yeah, I'll take it soon" and then not bothering.

One day I saw she had free kittens, and I had really wanted a cat. I called and said I'd like a kitten please, and I'll forget about that dent. Happy kitten, happy me.
