Somewhat misleading. Cuba doesn't border the US, and we still got the Cuba crisis. Sharing physical borders doesn't matter much, when missiles and bombers exist.

I think this rather ignores power projection doesn't it?

South Korea is a NATO staging ground for instance, so is Japan, so is Alaska, and so is Canada.

Yeah, it's misleading. There are NATO military bases even in non-NATO countries.
