This is so legit!! The point made in The Dilemma is the only reason I managed to finally push myself out of bed when I was rotting away in it. I was too anxious and depressed to get up and do anything, which meant I did nothing, which made me feel worse and more anxious, so I got more depressed. Sad cycle, isn’t it? This lasted for weeks until I was taken to the hospital for malnutrition. After my hospital stay, I read a book that said if I quit playing into my excuses (“but if I go out people might not like me”) and if I made the choice to do literally anything at all - brush my teeth, sit outside - I am almost guaranteed to feel better than if I did nothing at all. It took baby steps for me to learn, but it’s true and proven over and over again: taking a risk is always more rewarding, even when you fail, than sitting around paralyzed by fear.

Edit: book was called “Feeling Good” by David Burns

I expected something at the end like "but don't risk handing your term paper in late because I'm not kidding about automatically failing anyone who does so"

But my zen master teaches me to wish for nothing.
