This is my alma mater and I have to say they have an incredible library system! Smathers Library East where the Baldwin Collection is held is one of the neatest historic buildings to boot. They have a reading room across from the collection with a large mural from the 1920s, oak paneling, vaulted windows and bankers lamps. It truly is like visiting Hogwarts. The staff at the UF libraries are amazing and let me install a fine art installation in one of their rooms during my time there. I have incredibly fond memories of this place and highly recommend a visit to Smathers if you find yourself in the Gainesville area.

Edited to add: If you are a fan of Alice in Wonderland, filter your search accordingly. The illustrations are wonderful. They have the traditional WH Walker illustrated copy as well as others but my favorite is the Mabel Lucie Atwell illustrated edition. I had posters from the Baldwin collection of the colored plates from that edition throughout my time at UF.

So like, I picked the first book from 1850 there... And it was a book of 150 short stories for young children.

The first story (3 pages long, really) was about a young girl who loved to collect flowers. One day, she went outside to pick flowers and got very sick from something. She then died. Her dying wish was to plant flowers. Her parents did so. But her father died as well. At least the flowers bloom every spring.

Man, children tales in 1850 were very different...
