I work for a government agency that for over 50 years had "retardation" in the title. A few years ago, there was a national campaign, and nationwide, agencies like ours changed that part of our name to "developmental disabilities". Like many have said, retarded, and retardation, were not derogatory originally. If people start using DD as slang, it will probably have to get changed again. :(
