Cartoons lied to us, clearly, cats and dogs get along just fine.

The San Diego Zoo has been creating this pairing now for 30 years. It works because the dogs have a calming effect on the cheetahs and the cats give the dogs a natural sense of companionship.

Lions often get such a pairing in sanctuaries when they aren't capable of reintegrating to a small pride or when there are no other lions present.

Dogs are able to fulfill many roles that the mother once performed, such as cleaning with their tongues. Some of you may consider this dirty, but if the lion cubs genitals aren't regularly cleaned they can get infected and that lion can get sick or even die.
