In the Watchmen, The Comedian's funeral has the flag draped over his coffin for service in Vietnam. Notice there are 51 stars on the flag, because in Watchmen's 1985, Vietnam is a state, thanks to Dr. Manhattan and The Comedian's involvement.

People are asking if it really has 51 stars. It's a little hard to tell but yes it looks like it:

The top row looks like it has 8 stars, accounting for one hidden by the ripple. You can see from looking at the far side that the pattern is:

Short row Long row Short row Long row Short row Long row

Since the short rows are indented in by half a star, they have 1 fewer stars than a long row. That means there's:

8 + 9 + 8 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 51

See this is an actual movie detail, not the usual reaching bullshit like “In this scene Billy Crudup is outside where the sky is blue, symbolizing his future transformation into Dr. Manhattan!”

There's also a mural stating "USA Welcomes Vietnam As Our 51st State!" during one of the scenes.

Here an image from the scene.

Here's the mural a bit easier to see.
