There was a TV show (CSI or some such) where they caught a hacker by doing something literal like chasing him through a video game. I suspect that whoever wrote this, if genuine, has probably seem a show like that and thinks that's how things are done online.

Edit: it was the Second Life chase scene from CSI: NY (here's a Reddit post from the time, discussing it), but you can find tons of other classics by searching for "computer fails in TV shows" or similar - here's a good example
