It's my understanding that mapmakers used to include a false detail, such as a street, on their maps, so that they could easily tell if another map publisher had simply copied them.

IIRC from a book by Chuck Palahniuk, I think Stranger Than Fiction, Avery used to sell a package of labels with the name Tyler Durden and the address of Paper Street and that's where he got it for the book.

We give street tests where I work, it’s basically some part of the town with all the street names removed except for one just for orientation. It’s uo to you to fill in the map, well some of the new guys think they can cheat and wind up putting a paper street down on the street test. Catch em every time
