Vegetarianism and veganism have had significant effects on the meat industry.

15 years ago you might have known only a handful of vegetarians and probably zero vegans.

But the popularization of these diets have done exactly what the supporters for each of the causes have wanted to achieve – a lot less animals are being killed each year for meat.

It has been revealed that half a billion fewer animals a year are now killed to bring the industry in line with the demands from the public.

As well as less meat products on our shelves, supermarkets and restaurants in every corner of the world now cater for the vegetarian and vegan diet with most restaurants now having at least one vegan dish on the menu, 10 years ago this would have been an anomaly.

Animal rights activists who chose not to eat meat because they believe that it is cruel to slaughter the beings to simply fill ones stomach are not the only people who have had an impact on the industry.

We are now seeing more and more people switching to a plant-based diet out of a desire to help the environment.

The meat industry is one of the biggest polluters of the earth’s atmosphere. 51% of all greenhouse gasses come from farming and animal agriculture and the demands on the planet in terms of the space that it takes up and the drain on resources are huge.

Animals bred for meat use a huge amount of water, a single cow consumes 50 gallons of water on a normal day.

If the trend continues and the number of animals that are slaughtered each year reduces by the same amount, it won’t be long before the meat industry represents only a tiny proportion of the foods that we consume every day.

Benefits of a plant based diet include better health, increased energy levels, better protection against diseases and weight loss.

I don't eat meat because it's expensive and cheaper to cook vegetarian most of the time

I used to be a hardcore meat eater, made fun of vegans. Now I mostly only eat chicken and only have red meat maybe once a month. Now I love vegan food and I eat far healthier now. Didn't plan it, just kinda happened.
