For the first time EVER, Avatar: The Last Airbender has been released in HD. And it’s ACTUALLY HD!

It is truly a momentous day… After over a decade, Nickelodeon has finally, finally, FINALLY released ATLA in HD! And it’s real, actual, true HD! By this, I mean that it’s NOT an upscale, it’s actually a high resolution render of the original materials, so all the gorgeous hand-painted backgrounds and all the beautiful hand-drawn animation that have been sitting in the Nickelodeon dungeon for ten years are now being seen in their full glory for the first time ever!

If you look at the example images above, you can see that the background art is clearly a much higher resolution than before, there’s visibly more detail. It’s not just zoomed in/stretched, it’s actually a higher resolution.

If you look at our boy Sokka, you can see that the infamous haloing and ghosting of the early DVDs is GONE. This means that somewhere they had the original assets and output those in high definition. That’s what makes it true HD and not just an upscale (though there was probably still some upscaling involved since the show was drawn for SD).

Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Complete Series is available for download in 1080p HD on iTunes and the three seasons individually on Amazon.
