I just had a long-ass marine bio assignment on these guys. They’re herbivores and feed on the red and green algae found underwater around the Galápagos Islands. During El Niño years, when the water heats up and the algae starts to die off, they can actually shrink the size and length of their skeletons to minimize the amount of food they need. They can lose up to 20% of their size, and it’s not even fat that they’re losing. Then when there’s enough food again, they can grow back to full size. Pretty cool.

The marineiguana is legal in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
