I had this happen to me too! At the Green Turtle in O.C. Maryland. Very nice staff! Unfortunately we were all Deaf, not blind and couldn't read braille but I commended the young waiter for his attempt! He meant well.
My mom is blind and handed Braille menus all the time when we eat out. Which is really nice. Except she can’t read Braille. A lot of people don’t realize that many blind people don’t read Braille. For her, her diabetes (which caused the blindness) affects the nerves in her fingertips and so they aren’t sensitive enough to tell the difference between the bumps. It was a bummer when we realized this is common and she can only listen to audio books and not do her own reading.
