One time during my junior year of college I was going to go home for the weekend to see my family and my dog but stayed out drinking too much the night before, so I just decided I'd go home and visit next weekend instead when I wasn't a hungover zombie.
My mom called me the next day to tell me the dog I grew up had died that morning. I think I will forever be beating myself up for not being home that weekend to see her one last time. I don't really have a point for this post OP, but I hope you cherish every moment you're home with your dog.
