I went in for surgery on my leg when I was four. The surgeon had been told that I liked dinosaurs so he brought in some dinosaur picture books and we leafed through them together before the surgery.

I remember we were in the middle of a serious discussion about who would win in a fight between a triceratops and a tyrannosaurus while the anesthesia was being administered. After some argument, he accepted that the triceratops would win. It really took my mind off of the fear.

Edit- the nurse thought the triceratops would win because they lived in herds. She knew what she was talking about!

I'm a parent of a of a nine year old who had open heart surgery three years ago. We had her surgery in Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton Canada. They have an amazing team there. A couple of days prior to the surgery she was given role play counseling where the whole thing was explained by a therapist in a really child friendly way and I think that helped her out a lot in the long run sort of knowing as best as a six year old can what she was about to go through. In order to make for a calmer experience they gave her "amnesia juice" I'm sure the real name is way more medical sounding and they probably even told us what it was but I can't remember it off the top of my head. Anyways, within about ten minutes my daughter was pulling her surgical cap over her face and asking who the people were in the window beside her bed in the pre-op. (It was us). I have never been so scared and at the same time giggly in my entire life. I am happy though that she didn't go into the OR completely freaked out and that her mom was allowed to go in while they I.V.'ed her and put her under.
