To clarify, this is the total bill from the hospital submitted to my insurance company. Not my actual "cost" of the birth. Forgive me for the confusing title.

Edit: Wow, front page and reddit gold. Thank you all so much! I figured this would get around 10 upvotes, like the rest of my crappy posts.

The total bill from the hospital, submitted to insurance, is $41,158.50. I'm not even sure what some of the charges are, like "PT Convenience" or "Nursing". Also, we were in the "Recovery Room" (which was just a bed behind a curtain in an open floor setting) for 3 hours and billed nearly $3,000USD.

I forgot to add an $1,800 charge to the Sankey that they made me pay at the hospital before they discharged my wife. They tried to charge me around $3,500 if I remember correctly, but I insisted on paying "the lowest payment accepted" at the time, which was ~$1,800.

Edit: To answer a popular question, I am not sure how much will be needed out of pocket. This is just an illustration of what the hospital billed my insurance company. I'm still waiting to get my final bill from insurance.

Edit: When I get my final bill from insurance, I will chart the actual out-of-pocket charges, insurance coverage and insurance "discounts" given by the hospital to the insurance company.

Edit: Source of data is from the hospital bill I received. Tool used to create the sankey chart: http://sankeymatic.com

Yeah I live in northeast Texas and when my wife and I had our daughter in September of 2014 she had to have a C section as well, after a whole day and night of pushing. I remember seeing the breakdown of the bills when I got it from the Hospital and Insurance. We don’t live in a big city so our bill was a touch over $20,000, ultimately we ended up paying about $3,000. It took time and payments and in about September of last year I paid her off. We now own our daughter out right.

My son was an emergency C-section 5 years ago. I'm not sure I'd even be able to put together somethign like this. Billing and insurance was so incredibly confusing. We received bills for months after the birth from different providers and multiple times got checks in the mail from providers that apparently were overpaid. We got all kinds of different answers from insurance about what we owed vs what they would pay, etc.

I feel immense sympathy for people with chronic conditions that have to navigate this maze. It's a huge stressor heaped upon people at the time where they are least able to handle it. Its a cruel system.
