A friend of mine had steps similar to these leading up to her family home but they weren't allowed to do anything about them because the house was heritage listed.
I remember seeing a story somewhere that a church or old building in Italy had steps like this so they decided to just flip the stones over. That way it was still the "original" steps but would be much safer. But when they did that they realized that it's already been done before and the other side was just as worn.
