It's not just about the physical card. Simply knowing the number controls access to your identity, you routinely have to write it down, and you can't easily change it if its compromised.

An email account is easier to protect than an Americans identity. With hacks that have occurred over the last decade, it is estimated that the identities of more than half of Americans can be seized at any time. A conflict with a major world power will likely involve a crippling attack to overwhelm our financial institutions. I find this more than mildly infuriating.
