I like to think that somewhere in history there was a dude named Frank who just went around telling people how it was with no thought about their feelings or common courtesy.
Just like walking down the street and he's like "Gerta, you're getting fat as shit. John, how's the alcoholism? I see judy remarried to your brother. Better that way for the kids. He has his shit together."
So then behind his back whenever someone is blatantly honest about something someone in the town was like "You're being Frank man".
And it stuck. Then as people from the town left for other towns over years, they kept using the term until everyone was using it.
