The hotel I worked at never charged the fee for smoking or taking towels, etc. They said the credit card company would just reverse the fee if the customer complained. The policy was just there to discourage smoking in the room and stealing stuff from the room.

And I bet they try to charge rubes upwards of $300 for a smoking room at the front desk! Thanks for this one buddy.

Doug Stanhope makes essentially this exact joke in his new book. He says he offers them $250 up front every time he books a room basically.
