Staff working in Parliament tried to access online pornography once every nine minutes in the last couple of months, despite a crackdown on inappropriate sexual behaviour, new figures show.

More than 24,000 attempts were made to get onto adult websites from inside the Parliamentary estate - around 160 requests per day - although most were blocked.

Users on the Parliamentary network, including MPs, peers, staff and contractors, used their devices to try and connect to banned content almost 25,000 times in just four months.

It emerged despite a widespread crack-down on inappropriate behaviour in Westminster after the former deputy Prime Minister Damian Green was sacked amid claims about porn on his parliamentary computer and that he touched a woman without her consent.

Theresa May demanded her close friend step down after he issued "misleading" statements about allegations that porn was found on his work computers during a raid of his office in 2008.

In his resignation letter, Mr Green continued to deny "unfounded and deeply hurtful" claims that he downloaded or viewed the material. He has also denied claims that he touched a young political activist on the knee, saying the allegation is "untrue and deeply hurtful".

Anyone with any experience in the IT world understands what constitutes an 'attempt'. A single webpage could potentially have tens of embedded advertisements (you know - "hot singles in your area" kinda bullshit), and each one the page loads would potentially constitute an 'attempt' in this context.

Now I don't at all mean to suggest they're all as such, but perhaps an appreciable number of these attempts were absolutely unintentional, such as simply clicking the wrong link in an obscure Google search or even being baited to click a link you shouldn't have resulting in some lovely blue waffles.
