Actually average hours worked per week have been steadily reducing for a century, not that it feels like it if you're one of the workers. As you would expect American's hours have been reducing less steeply than pretty much every other developed nation...

Yes it has, but not the way you're thinking.

Manager looks at balance sheet and realizes production is so high he can lower labor by 40 hours a week. So he fires someone.

Now collectively the workforce is working 40 less hours per week.

Minimum wage in the 70's is equivalent to 18/hr today when adjusted for inflation
