Over here in Ontario, Canada they just ruled that Hydro one cannot shut your hydro (so including your heat unless you have a wood stove or other ways of heat of course) off during the winter. Which is amazing I lived without power for over a year when I was 12. No heat here is next to impossible in my opinion. Never again

It's more to do with building standards and Insulation than subsidies fuel costs..

The UK and Ireland should fare better but we have much older housing stock that is brick built and is hard to retro insulate.

As a Greek I can definitely confirm the situation, most people here barely have enough money to pay the bills for heating purposes.. Even jokes for "heating" parties are somewhat common.
