Thank god JKR introduced the elder wand ownership angle. Otherwise Harry would have been left looking really stupid against old Voldy's Avada Kedavra.
I wonder though what he would have done had he not worked out all that stuff from before.

Harry reached his wand just in time. Lockhart had barely raised his, when Harry bellowed, 'Expelliarmus!' Lockhart was blasted backward, falling over his trunk; his wand flew high into the air; Ron caught it, and flung it out of the open window. 'Shouldn’t have let Professor Snape teach us that one,' said Harry furiously, kicking Lockhart’s trunk aside.

Something that ALWAYS bothered me. Why don't these idiots tie a leather wrist thong around their wands. The expelliarmus would still knock it out of their hands, but it wouldn't go far.
