They both look like they’re really enjoying the moment.

I remember one late night many years ago when my children were small. We had them out far too late (but we were on vacation, and on foot, and had underestimated how long it would take us to,walk back to our accommodations). As we are walking through the town we came across a group of very tough looking teens, smoking and drinking and taking up the entire sidewalk. The language was loud and rough. I hesitated, wondering how I would keep my children safe if something went sideways. Suddenly one of the teens spotted us and said, 'Hey. Little kids.' The teens became quiet and moved back to give us room. Then I noticed that the smokers had cupped their hands over the lit cigarettes to make sure our children didn't brush against them. As we walked past, many nodded at our kids and smiled. I guess that memory is sort of 'mindbleach' for me when I'm feeling too cynical and fed up with how things are.
