How rare are these clouds supposed to be? I see them almost weekly in the UK. Not at that level of brightness or colourfulness though, very nice photo. Looks stunning.

These are called polar stratospheric clouds, and are frequently discussed on spaceweather.com (but not right now). Atmospheric Optics provides another page on the topic (linked from Space Weather).

Picture is amazing. I would be scared of some sort of creature crawling up out of the depths of that black water.
