The early Mormons (i.e. Brigham Young and crowd) taught that monogamy led to the downfall of Rome. Needless to say, this isn't official doctrine of the Mormon church anymore.
I mean, I've been taught the fall of the west was mainly a series of weaker emporers and their inability to deal with external groups (Vandals, later Goths etc.) taking crucial land because of infighting between Generals (Constantine 3 for example), as well as a economic issues from an inflated currency and a lower population.
