My wife runs a veterinary hospital, and this time of year is always terrible. Every night she comes home, and curls up under her blanket on the couch to cry for a bit. And Gatsby, her best-good friend, is always there to purr and purr and make things better.

May I ask why this time of year is terrible?

I'm old so I've outlived quite a few pets, mostly cats. Every one has been euthanized rather than suffer. Every one I have held in my arms while the lethal injection was administered and took effect. It has never got easier, but I would never let my little mates go without that comfort. And a vet who can handle the job with compassion for both of us in in the top rank of very special people.

I'm a courier for one of the biggest package-handling companies in the world. One is my last stops each day is the regional emergency veterinary clinics. At least once a week I pass by a whole family sobbing on the sidewalk outside.

It breaks my heart as a pet owner.
