I imagine Judas was like "let me give this guy a chance, he just invited me to dinner, I mean he can't get any worse".

Jesus: Drink this wine for it is my blood and eat this bread for it is my body.

Judas: (Internal monologue: Yup that's it, this dude is fucking crazy!)

Well, from a purely literary standpoint, that’s not true. Judas was a zealot, so he was fighting against Roman oppression. He followed Jesus because he was told that Jesus was the Messiah. He assumed Jesus would be more like a warrior king like David or Joshua. Once Judas realized that Jesus’ plan was not the same plan Judas had, he turned on him. In Judas’ mind, the Romans didn’t deserve the mercy Jesus was offering. Once Judas realized the “true” plan of Jesus, he was so overcome with guilt, he took his own life.
